44th WMC Modern Pentathlon – Competition Day 3, 4 & 5

WARENDORF (GER) – The 44th WMC Modern Pentathlon ended up on Sunday 25th September in Warendorf (GER). The final of the women’s competition took place on September 23. It was a very high level competition with the presence of several Olympic medalist (Yana Marques (BRA), Elodie Clouvel (FRA) and Oktawia Nowacka (POL)). Despite her bad start (31st time in the swimming event – 2:32,24), Ekaterina Khuraskina manage to win the gold medal. Thanks to her great performances in the fencing event (23V-9D), in the ride event (300 points and first place) and in the combined event (7th place – 13:21,37), she finished the competition with a 12-points lead on her teammate Svetlana Lebedeva (RUS) (2:15,75 in swimming – 18V-4D in fencing, 293 points in ride and 13:19,08 in the CE for a total of 1289 points). Yana Marques (BRA), who took the bronze medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games took the bronze medal of this 44th WMC with the same total as Lebedeva (1289 points). She was leading the competition until the combined event but her bad performance (22nd place – 14:14,69) led her to the third place.

In the women’s team competition, Russia won another gold medal thanks to Khuraskina, Lebedeva and Savchenko (3760 points). Lithuania (Venckauskaite, Batuleviciute and Juchneviciute – 3599 points) took the second place while Brazil (Marques, Lellys, and Oliveira) took the bronze medal

Egypt totally dominated the men’s competition: two gold medals and one silver medal.
In the men’s individual competition, Rashad (EGY) was leading the competition until the last event of the day, the combined event. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t do anything against his teammate Hefny’s performance (11:40,2 – 600 points) who won the gold medal thanks to this result with a total of 1431 points. Rashad Sherif (1426 points) must console himself with the silver medal. The bronze medal goes to Valentin Belaud (FRA – 1421 points) who won the combined event with a 10 seconds-lead on Hefny, unfortunately not enough to grab the first two places.

Egypt (Hefny, Rashad, Hamad – 4192 points) also won the team event final ahead of Czech Republic (Kindl, Bilko, Svechota – 4188 points) and Russia (Naumov, Karyakin, Shugarov – 4169 points).

Oktawia Nowacka, who won the bronze medal in the Rio 2016 OG, won the gold medal together with her teammate Jaroslaw Swiderski with a total of 1373 points. The regularity they showed during the whole event (4th place in swimming, 1st place in fencing, 2nd place in riding and 3rd place in combined event) permitted them to win this competition. The Ukrainian team, composed of Permykina and Pavlyuk, took the silver medal (1341 points) while Egypt won another medal with the third place of Aboubakr and Hefny (1333 points).
