49th WMC Orienteering – São Pedro Da Aldeia (BRA) –Competition Day 3 & Closing Ceremony

 

  

SAO PEDRO DA ALDEIA (BRA) – The last day of competition of the 49th WMC Orienteering took place in Buzios, a small town located on the eastern coast of Rio, with this first Urban Relay, an unique experience, in presence of “Prefeito” André Granado, the Mayor of Buzios. With this competition, the Brazilian organizers wanted to promote Orienteering and it was a real success! The men relay (3x9km) and the women relay (3x6km) took place in the streets of Buzios in front of many spectators.

 

 

Matthias Kyburz, the King of Brazil!

 

After winning the Middle Distance, the Long Distance and the Team event, Matthias Kyburz managed to win a 4th gold medal in this WMC, an incredible performance realized by the Swiss athlete who already won several titles (3 gold medals in the World Championships, 2 gold medals in the World Cup Events, 3 gold in the World Games…). With his teammates Florian Howald and Martin Hubmann, Matthias Kyburz won the Urban Relay with a 2 minutes-lead on Russia (Nakonechnyi, Tcvetkov and Khramov – 2:22:47) while the Polish athletes Olejnik, Pawlak and Kowalski grabbed the bronze medal (2:22:51).

 

 

In the women’s relay, Russia destroyed its opponents. Indeed, Efimova, Novikova and Vinogradova finished the race with a 8 minutes and 30 seconds-lead on the Polish team composed by Wisniewska, Gwozdz and Hornik (1:53:56). Lithuania (Ambrazaite, Pauzaite and Gvildyte) finally took the bronze medal with a total time of 1:56:42.

 

 

The Closing Ceremony of this WMC took place after the last competitions in presence of Colonel Weigold, CISM OCR for this WMC, Colonel Østbye, CISM PCSC for Orienteering, Vice-Admiral Paulo Martino Zuccaro, Chief of Delegation of Brazil to CISM, several Brazilian high authorities as Admiral Marine Fernando Antonio De Siqueira Ribeiro, Commandant of the Brazilian Navy Marine Corps, Lieutenant General Ricardo Machado Vieira, Secretary of Human Resources, Education, Health and Sport of the Brazilian Ministry of Defense, and the delegations.

 

 

After the lowering of the Flags, the Finnish delegation received the CISM Flag, as they will host the 50th edition of the WMC Orienteering in June 2016 in Hamina and Lappeeranta.

At the end of the Ceremony, Colonel Harald Østbye, the CISM PCSC for Orienteering, received the CISM Order of Merit medal for the tremendous work he did for CISM and Orienteering during his PCSC mandate, as he will retire by the end of the year! Thank you Colonel Østbye!
