49th WMC Orienteering – São Pedro Da Aldeia (BRA) – Opening Ceremony, Competition Day 1 & 2

 

 

SAO PEDRO DA ALDEIA (BRA) - On November 18, 208 athletes from 25 countries gathered in the São Pedro Da Aldeia (BAeNSPA) Aero Naval Base for the Opening Ceremony of the 49th WMC Orienteering. This World Military Championship is coordinated by the CDBM (Comissão Desportiva Militar do Brasil), the Ministry of Defense, under the aegis of the International Military Sports Council (CISM). The athletes will compete in 3 different events: the Middle Distance (5 KM), the Long Distance (14 km) and the Relay.

Before the Opening Ceremony, the 25 Chiefs of Mission were invited to a Welcome Diner by the Vice-Admiral Paulo Martino Zuccaro, Chief of Delegation of Brazil to CISM.

 

 

The Opening Ceremony took place in presence the CISM OCR Colonel Weigold, the CISM PCSC Colonel Østbye, CISM PCSC for Orienteering, Vice-Admiral Paulo Martino Zuccaro, Chief of Delegation of Brazil to CISM, several Brazilian high authorities as Admiral Marine Fernando Antonio De Siqueira Ribeiro, Commandant of the Brazilian Navy Marine Corps, Lieutenant General Ricardo Machado Vieira, Secretary of Human Resources, Education, Health and Sport of the Brazilian Ministry of Defense, and the delegations.

 

 

After the raise of the CISM and Brazilian flags, the anthems were played. Then the CISM OCR Colonel Weigold took the floor to thank Brazil for the organization and welcome all the delegations, followed by the Opening Speech of the Vice-Admiral Paulo Martino Zuccaro.

Admiral Fernando Antonio De Siqueira Ribeiro, Commandant of the Brazilian Navy Marine Corps then officially declared the Championship open. The Opening Ceremony concluded with the delegations parade.

The competition venue is located 1h30 away from the Base in Rio das Ostras.

 

Competition Program:

 

  • Short Distance: Men 5km & Women 3,7km

  • Long Distance: Men 13,1km & Women 8km

  • Urban Relay: 3 athletes x 9km for a total of 27km

 

The first day of competition of the 49th WMC Orienteering started with the Middle Distance Event with 27°C and a bright sunshine. Matthias Kyburz (SUI), who already took the bronze medal in the middle distance event and the gold medal in the long distance event in 2015 at the Mungyeong CISM World Summer Games, managed to win the gold medal with a 73-seconds lead on Leonid Novikov (RUS – 0:32:36). Kyburz’s teammate Martin Hubmann finished on the third step of the podium and grabbed a second medal for Switzerland (0:33:14). In yesterday’s Long Distance Event, Matthias Kyburz once again proved that he’s currently of one the best athlete of the discipline as he finished on the first place of the podium with an amazing 3-minutes lead on the silver medalist Frédéric Tranchand (FRA). Timo Sild (EST) won the first medal for Estonia in this Championship.

 

 

Switzerland (Kyburz, Hubmann, Howald & Egger) also won the gold medal in the Team Competition ahead of Russia (Novikov L., Novikov V. Tcvetkov & Khramov) and Poland (Kowalski, Pawlak, Olejnik & Podzinski) who were respectively awarded the silver and bronze medal.

 


In the women’s Middle Distance competition, Russia totally dominated the race with 3 athletes in the top 5. Natalia Efimova (RUS) took the first place of the event (0:30:32) while Sarina Jenzes provided to Switzerland its 5th medal of the championship with her second place (0:31:16). The bronze medal was awarded to Yulia Novikova (RUS) who finished the race with a total time of 0:31:41.

 

 

Sarina Jenzes took her revenge in the long distance event as she won the gold medal (0:57:41), 1’57’’ ahead of Natalia Efimova who had to settle this time with the bronze medal.  Ursula Kadan, from Austria, took the second place of the event (0:59:38).

 

 

In the Women’s Team Competition, Russia (Efimova, Novikova & Mironova) took the first place while Poland (Wisniewska, Hornik & Gwozdz) and Switzerland (Jenzes, Roos & Schwab) respectively won the silver and bronze medal.
