3rd CISM World Winter Games: Competition Day 3 & CISM Gala Dinner

SOCHI (RUS) – Yesterday, January 26, was already Day 3 of competition of the 3rd World Winter Games Sochi 2017 and Russia once again secured a whole set of medals.

In cross-country, the men’s team sprint freestyle was a suspense-filled race. Indeed, there was only a 0,32-second gap between the three teams on the podium. The Russian Team 1, composed of Artem Maltsev and Nikolay Morilov, took the gold medal (20:36.70) ahead of France (Clement Arnault and Paul Goalabre – 20:36.80) and Finland 1 (Kusti Kittilae and Juho Mikkonen – 20:37.02). In the women’s team sprint freestyle event, Russia 2 won a second gold medal as Natalja Iljina and Natalia Korosteleva won the race with a 12.6 seconds lead ahead of Switzerland (Alina Meier and Fabiana Wieser). Italy 2 (Chiara De Zolt Ponte and Francesca Baudin) completed the podium with a final time of 22:33.41 (+22.0).

The last alpine skiing competition of the 3rd World Winter Games took place yesterday in the Rosa Khutor Alpine Skiing Centre with the Slalom Women. Irene Curtoni (ITA) finished the two runs in second position, but her total (1:38.51) time allowed her to win a deserved gold medal with a 0.42-second lead ahead of Maria Shkanova (BLR) while Laurie Mougel finished on the third step of the podium (1:38.97). In the team women slalom event, Italia (Perruchon, Curtoni and Azzola) also won the gold medal. Russia (Tkachenko, Alopina and Pogrebitskaya) is second while China (Zhang, Qin, Qi) finished in third position.

After dominating the two ski orienteering events on January 25, Russia repeated the performance with seven medals in the ski orienteering events. Eduard Khrennikov, who already won the middle distance on January 25, was the fastest in the men’s sprint individual event. Once again, he managed the Bulgarian silver medalist Stanimir Belomazhev with 42 seconds-lead. Vladimir Ignatov (RUS) took the bronze medal. In the women’s sprint individual race, four Russian athletes are monopolizing the four first places: Tatiana Oborina took the gold medal (00:17:54), Mariia Kechkina finished on the second step of the podium (00:18:11), while Anastasia Kravchenko (00:18:55) deprived her teammate Tatiana Vlasova (00:19:18) of the bronze medal.

In the men’s team competition, Russia (Khrennikov, Malinobskii and Ignatov) easily won the gold medal. Finland (Toivonen, Hyppoelae) is second and France (Debayle, Fuchs, Gouy) completes the podium. Finally, Russia won its last gold medal of the day with the victory of Kechkina and Oborina in the women’s team competition ahead of the silver medalist Kazakhstan (Novikova & Nazyrova) and the bronze medalist France (Bourgeois-Pin and Barlet).
