3rd CISM World Winter Games: Competition Day 4 – Russian Domination

 

 

SOCHI (RUS) – The fourth and last day of competition of the 3rd CISM World Winter Games Sochi 2017 took place yesterday, February 27, and the last medals were awarded in four sports: Sport Climbing, Biathlon, Ski Mountaineering and Ski Orienteering.

 

 

It is a fact! In Ski Orienteering, Russia is currently the best nation in the military sport world with eight gold medals in eight events! In the Ski Orienteering Women Relay, the Russians Oborina, Kravchenko and Kechkina easily won the gold medal with a 14 minutes lead on France (Denaix, Barlet and Bourgeois-Pin) while Kazakhstan (Nazyrova, Moldasheva and Novikova) took the bronze medal. It the Men Relay, once again, Team Russia was the fastest country and won the title with a total time of 1:05:52. Congratulations to the Russians Malinobskii, Lamov and Khrennikov. France (Gouy, Debayle and Fuchs – 1:12:30) finished on the second place of the podium and Switzerland (Aschwanden, Lutz and Kappenberger – 1:14:27) took the bronze medal.

 

 

The Men’s Spanish Team of Ski Mountaineering composed of Caballero Ortega and Hernando Alzaga had to fight until the end of the race against a valiant French Team (Fleury and Sevennec) to win the gold medal of the Team Race with an 8-seconds lead. Italy (Reichegger and Antonioli) is completing the podium with a total time of 1:57:24. In the women team event, France dominated the competition. Indeed, Letizia Roux and Adele Milloz finished the race with a 25-minutes lead ahead of the Russian team (Ekaterina Mitiaeva and Svetlana Berezan). A deserved gold medal for France!

 

 

In biathlon, the Patrol Race is one of the main impressive event of the competition. As usual, France made a great impression in the women 15km patrol race as Varcin, Mougel, Latuilliere and Thomas Hugue took the gold medal with a total time of 45:23.0. The Russian team composed of Nechkasova, Zagoruiko, Kaisheva and Durkina had to be content with the silver medal while China (Wang, Chu, Zhang and Chen) finished on the last step of the podium! In the men’s team event, Russia won another gold medal thanks to Kornev, Eliseev, Klyachin and Latypov. France (Arnaud, Jouty, Guigonnat and Tarantola) was ranked second while Austria (Leitinger, Komatz, Brunner and Plessniter) took the bronze medal.

 

 

Finally, in Sports Climbing, Russia won three out of the four gold medals awarded. Sergei Luzhetskii (RUS) won the men speed classic format event against the Austrian Jackob Schubert while Vadim Timonov (RUS) defeated Christoph Hanke in the bronze medal contest. In the women speed classic format, Anna Tsyganova won another gold medal for the host country as she defeated Jessica Pilz (AUT) in the final contest. In the bronze medal run, Lapshina (RUS) got rid of her teammate Shemulinkina.

 

 

Guillaume Moro (FRA) broke the Russian domination in the sports climbing with his victory in the men speed record format. Gontero (ITA) could not do anything against the Russian athlete in the gold medal run. Luzhetskii (RUS) managed to take another bronze medal for the host country with her victory in the bronze medal game against Santoni (ITA). The last gold medal was awarded to the Russian athlete Anna Tsyganova who won the gold medal contest of the women speed record format against the French athlete Sarisson (FRA). Daria Kan (RUS) was ranked third after defeating Victoire Andrier (FRA).
