50th WMC Shooting – Thun (SUI) – Day 1 & 2

 

 

THUN (SUI) – The 50th WMC Shooting officially started yesterday in Thun, Switzerland, where 555 participants (410 male, 145 female) from 45 CISM Member Nations gathered from May 29 to June 6, 2018. After the Technical Meeting and the first trainings held in the morning, the 45 participating nations attended the Opening Ceremony at the Town Hall Square on Wednesday.

From Lower Main Street, representatives from 45 nations - North Korea had cancelled at the last moment - led by their flag bearers on the square and lined up in a row in front of the city hall for the opening ceremony.

 

 

The following authorities attended the event: Colonel Dirk Schwede, CISM VP Europe and Official CISM Representative for this event - Lieutenant-Colonel Christian Hess, Chief of Delegation of Switzerland to CISM and President of the Organizing Committee - Colonel Claude Portmann, Deputy Chief of the  Organizing Committee - Colonel Bruno Wolfensberger, PCSC Shooting – Lieutenant-General Philippe Rebord, Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces – Mr. Raphael Lanz, Mayor of Thun - Brigadier Stefan Christen - Brigadier the command of the Association Genius / Rescue – the Chiefs of Delegation of the participating Nations and national and international high authorities.

 

 

After the hymns were played, Lieutenant-Colonel Christian Hess greeted the military shooters from all over the world in Thun. He thanked the city for providing the venue for the Opening Ceremony in the centre of the historic old town.

Thun Mayor Raphael Lanz also emphasized the efforts done by the city: “It’s a very good location for the WMC and there is a close tie between the city and the army”.

Colonel Dirk Schwede recalled the long shooting tradition in Switzerland, where the first shooting competition took place in 1442 and underlined the Swiss hospitality.

 

 

The head of the Swiss army, Corps commander Philippe Rebord, officially declared the WMC Open who highlighted the role of sport within the Swiss Army.

4 competitions took place yesterday, May 31: the 300m Standard Rifle 3 X 20 Men Team, the 50m Rifle 60 Prone Women Team, the 25m Centre Fire Pistol Team Men as well as the individual qualifications of these three events.

Norway had an amazing start in this 50th edition of the World Military Shooting Championship as the Norwegian shooters grabbed two gold medals out of the three awarded yesterday.

 

 

The Norwegians SGT Lund, SGT Brekne and SGT Bryhn brought the first gold medal to the Norwegian collection as they achieved a new CISM World Record in the 300 Metre Standard Rifle 3*20 Men team event with a total of 1752-63x. The Finnish team, composed of SGT Kurki, CAD Leppä and SSGT Autio, finished on the second step of the podium (1729-48x) while Poland (PVT Bartnik, LCPL Skorupa and WO Kraskowski – 1726 -56x) took bronze.

The second Norwegian gold medal was awarded to the 50 Metre Rifle 60 Prone Women team, composed of PVT Lund, PVT Lovseth and PVT Duestad, who achieved an amazing performance with a total of 1846, just 2,2 points ahead of the Chinese team (MAJ Wan, CPT Gao and CDT Shi – 1843,8), silver medallist. The Ukrainian shooters MAJ Kalnysh, Maj Leskiv and PVT Ilina took the bronze medal with 1840,6!

 

 

Finally, the last gold medal was awarded to China in the 25 Metre Centre Fire Pistol Men Team event. Congratulations to CDT Yao, LTC Jin and WO Hu for this impressive performance (1727-57x). Ukraine grabbed another medal with a second place (1st SGT Korostylov, MAJ Petriv and LT Bankin – 1724-58x) ahead of the Czech Republic team (MSG Tehan, WO Fiala and PVT Dubovy – 1717-46x) who won its first title of the competition.
