50th World Military Championship in Orienteering 2017

The Finnish Defence Forces will host the International Military Sports Council’s (CISM) 50th World Military Orienteering Championship (WMOC) from 10-16 June 2017 in the town and municipality of Hamina. In this jubilee event, the WMOC competition programme features competitions in three distances: Middle distance, Long distance, and Relay.

Approximately 260 military athletes and a hundred team leaders representing up to 30 countries are expected to take part in the competitions with details on the participating countries due in March.

The underlying theme of the championships is the CISM motto: "Friendship through Sport".

The Army Academy is responsible for the competition arrangements.

Finland will host these championships for the sixth time in 2017, with the previous venues for the WMOC having been Dragsvik in 1968, Hämeenlinna in 1976, Lahti in 1984, Säkylä in 1995, and Lappeenranta in 2005.

The Finnish Defence Forces hosted the CISM’s World Military Skiing Championship the previous time in Sodankylä and Levi in 2014.
