Highs and Lows are part of the Challenge in Aeronautical Pentathlon

WUHAN (CHN) – In every sports, athletes have their ups and downs, but probably none quite as literally as those participating in Aeronautical Pentathlon.

The “up” is flying in a military aircraft as part of the event’s flying contest, but rather than be behind the controls, the competitor's job is to use their navigation skills to accurately guide the aircraft —at the 7th CISM Military World Games (7th CWG) this event will take place at People's Liberation Army Air Force Nanchang CJ-6— at low level, around a triangular course.

The “down” is having to crawl on their bellies as part of the obstacle race, one of six disciplines in the sports contest section of the competition.

Shooting, orienteering, fencing, basketball skills - to emulate the hand-eye co-ordination pilots need - and swimming will also be fiercely contested by athletes from 10 nations. Only scores from an athlete's top five disciplines will go towards the final medal placings and overall rankings.

The Aeronautical Pentathlon will start today at the Aeronautical Pentathlon Flying Contest Venue in Xinzhou District, Wuhan.
