Kenyan to Close Season with Wuhan Games

WUHAN (CHN) - Kenya's Hellen Obiri, an Olympic silver medalist, will end her season with the just-opened CISM World Military Games, which are currently running from until October 27 in Wuhan, China.

Obiri, who two weeks ago clinched a gold at the World Athletics Championships, will head the Kenyan team to China as they seek to improve on their eighth overall position from the 2015 CISM World Military Games held in Mungyeong, South Korea.

Other top names of the Kenyan team include Boniface Mucheru, who won a bronze medal from the 400-meter hurdles, and Jackson Kivuva, a silver medalist in the 800 meters.

Four years ago, Kenya was ranked eighth overall after Russia, Brazil, China, Bahrain, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Norway.

"This will be my last race this season and I hope to end it with a win. It is as tough as the World Championships and there is no need to underrate it. The military has some of the best athletes and you never know what surprise waits in China," said Obiri on Friday in Nairobi.

World 400-meter champion Salwa Eid Naser is entered in the 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay as a confirmation that there will be top talents on show in Wuhan.

Obiri will be competing in the 5,000m and reigning world high jump champions Mariya Lasitskene and Mutaz Essa Barshim are also due to compete.
