Syria's sole female swimmer Jumah hoping to make her country proud

WUHAN (CHN) - Bayan Jumah (SYR) is hoping to make an impression in and out of the pool as part of a small Syria team at the 7th CISM Military World Games (7th CWG).

The 25-year-old will compete in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle and is one of just three swimmers to represent her country. She is also the only Syrian woman competing in Wuhan.

“I am really proud to be here as a Syrian mission member and I am the only female here at the Games [for my country]. I hope to make all the Syrians proud of me too," she said.

Jumah hails from the north-western city of Aleppo, where she started swimming aged five when her two older brothers, who went on to compete at national level, took her to the pool and set in motion a love affair with the water.

Having completed her preparations and arrived in China, JUMAH outlined her ambitions for the 7th CWG.

“My target is to get to the final. I really hope it! And to achieve the time for qualifying to the Olympic Games. I made it to Rio [for the 2016 Olympic Games] so now my goal is to achieve the time for qualifying."
