World champion swimmer CUNHA (BRA) using Wuhan to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics

 

 

WUHAN (CHN) – The five-time world champion Ana Marcela Cunha (BRA) declared the open water swimming competition at the 7th CISM Military World Games (7th CWG) is a significant milestone on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Cunha, a sergeant in the Brazilian army, won the 5km and 25km open water at the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea in July and sealed her qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by finishing fifth in the 10km event.

 

 

The 27-year-old will compete in the 5km, 10km and the mixed team relay at East Lakein Wuhan as she is preparing for the next year's Olympic Games.

It has been a busy year for Cunha. Apart from the world championships, Cunha also won gold at the Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru, and the World Beach Games in Doha, Qatar.

 

 

Wuhan is significant for the Brazilian and not only because of her Olympic preparations.

"For me, it is very important to take part in the 7th CISM World Summer Games. It is my last international competition this year", she said. "And it is the first time for me to attend the CISM Military Games".

At the end of the 7th CWG, Cunha will return to Brazil to compete in an 8.5km race across the Rio Negro in Manaus.

"We are trying to compete in races in hot water", she said. "We know that it is going to be hot in Japan".
