20th WMC Equestrian (Show Jumping) – Fontainebleau (FRA) – Day 1

FONTAINEBLEAU (FRA) – After 1971 and 1988, the city of Fontainebleau, France, is hosting for the third time an edition of the WMC Equestrian. On this morning of October 19, le Grand Parquet de Fontainebleau, a former hunting ground for the Kings of France and now a unique site mainly dedicated to horse riding and sports, hosted the Opening Ceremony of this event in presence of the CISM OCR Lieutenant-Colonel Walter Borghino, the Equestrian PCSC Colonel Max André Barbacini, the CISM HQ Representative and Results Manager & Para-Sport Advisor Major Guilherme Keese, the Commander of the CNSD and Chief of Delegation of France to CISM Commissaire en Chef de 1ère classe Hervé Piccirillo, the Commander of the French Military Riding School Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Maksud. Colonel Walter Borghino and Commissaire en Chef de 1ère classe Hervé Piccirillo successively took the floor to welcome the riders of the nine participating countries (Bahrain, Brazil, Kuwait, Morocco, the Netherlands, Spain, Tunisia, Uruguay and of course France). The warmup ended the morning session!

In the afternoon, it was time for the riders to start the competition on the magnificent riding course of the Grand Parquet de Fontainebleau. The Lieutenant-Colonel Thibaut Vallette, recent Olympic gold medalist in eventing team at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and his teammate Adjutant Donatien Schauly, who took part in the OG 2012 in London, were announce as the big favorites of the event.

For the first row of the WMC, the participants had to deal with a progressive difficulty course with 1 joker and 10 obstacles with a horse chosen by a draw.

Unexpectedly for most observers, who were expecting a victory from Lieutenant-Colonel Thibaut Vallette, the CDT Youssef Essamlali, from Morocco, and his horse Telstar de Pience showed out to be stronger than the others were. With 65 points in 49”91, the CDT Essamlali achieved a sensational performance and took the lead of the provisional ranking of this WMC. The female rider KPL/1 Angela Kalkman from the Netherlands, who led the provisional ranking for most of the first round, finally finished in second position with her horse Quitus de Saint-Fergeux (65 points and 52”48). The Spanish Lieutenant-Colonel Juan Queipo de Llano and his horse Pastis Chanière completed the podium after finishing the round one with 65 points in 53”11.

Unfortunately for the local fans present today, Lieutenant-Colonel Thibaut Vallette, Adjutant Donatien Schauly and Adjutant-Chief Banjamin Courtat, respectively ranked sixth, seventh and eighth, were left to settle for a place outside the podium.

As a consolation, France is leading the provisional team ranking ahead of Bahrain, the Netherlands, Spain, Morocco, Brazil, Uruguay, Tunisia and Kuwait!

After the visit of the Fontainebleau Castle in the morning, the second round of the WMC Equestrian will take place tomorrow afternoon at 16.30 in the Grand Parquet de Fontainebleau with a race against the clock without any jump off and 12 obstacles (one double included).
