ROZMYS (POL) crowned middle distance king on Polish Saturday at athletics

WUHAN (CHN) – Poland's Michal ROZMYS was crowned the middle distance king of Wuhan 2019 at Wuhan Five Rings Sports Center on Saturday.

After already having won the 800m on Wednesday, the 24-year-old from Poland spectacularly added the 1500m gold to his tally as he pipped Hicham OULADHA (MAR) and compatriot Marcin LEWANDOWSKI (POL) with a powerful kick in the final metres of the race.

"I just ran faster. I had more power in the last hundred metres," he said matter of factly.

The 1500m gold and bronze was just the start of more Polish success to come.

Poland's all-conquering 4x400m women took gold in a thrilling battle with Russia before Wojociech NOWICKI (POL) won the men's hammer throw. Those efforts delivered Poland three gold medals in six track and field events on Saturday.

Meanwhile, China collected its eighth athletics gold of the meet with ZHU Yaming winning the men's triple jump in a suspenseful final.

ZHU jumped 17.09m and Tomas VESZELKA (SVK) equalled that distance, only to take silver because his second best distance (16.72) was marginally shorter than ZHU's 16.96m.

The athletics program concludes on Sunday with the running of the men's and women's marathons from 08:00.
