CISM has 25 Category A sports for which a World Military Championship can be organized. Of course, CISM is also interested in new sports. In order to become a Category A sport, a sport has to prove enough countries are interested and it is strong enough to become a World Military Championship. For this, we have Challenges.

Countries can organize a challenge for all CISM Member Countries and through the success of this organization CISM can assess whether the sport has ‘Category A potential’.

In 2023 we have three challenges on the calendar: Ultra running in April in Portugal, Functional Fitness in July in Germany and Rugby sevens in August in Russia. Challenges are also published on the CISM Sports Calendar.
