Women's football: XU strikes late to edge 10-player China past Brazil

WUHAN (CHN) - Substitute XU Zhan (CHN) struck an extra-time winner as 10-player China beat Brazil 2-1 to advance to the Wuhan 2019 women’s football final on Thursday.

With a tight contest heading for penalties, XU planted a left foot drive into the bottom right of the Brazil goal in the 109th minute following a firm pass across the box by LIU Yanqiu (CHN).

The 29-year-old XU had only been on the pitch for six minutes after China coach ZHAO Zhengchun rang the changes following the dismissal of YAO Wei (CHN), who collected a second yellow card for hauling back Brazil’s playmaker Juliana FERREIRA.

China had eased through their group and looked set for another comfortable afternoon when YANG Li opened the scoring with a close range shot in the 12th minute.

A tall and strong Brazil side won all of the physical battles and were back on level terms shortly before half-time when striker Raiza SILVA (BRA) rose highest to head home a corner.

Brazil had the bulk of the second half possession but rarely threatened as China created the best of the chances on the break, before XU struck the decisive goal in extra-time.

“We had to make full preparations for defence and counter-attack,” Defender LIN Yuping (CHN) said. “The Brazil players were stronger and they ran very fast, so we had very a fierce competition.”

China will meet DPR Korea in Saturday’s final at the Hankou Culture and Sports Center after they beat Republic of Korea 2-0 on Thursday.
