2nd WMC Beach Volleyball – Rio de Janeiro (BRA) – Opening Ceremony and Competition Day 1

 

 

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA) – The Opening Ceremony held on November 7 marked the official start of the 2nd WMC Beach Volleyball in Rio de Janeiro where 56 athletes (40 male and 16 female) from 9 countries gathered for this event organized  in the Army’s physical training center (CCfEx).

Several high authorities attended the event: Colonel David Kabré, Official CISM Representative and Member of the BoD - Colonel José Pinheiro, CISM Beach Volleyball PCSC and Member of the CISM HQ - Colonel Walter Jander, CISM VP America and his assistant WO Jorge Junqueira - Army General Mauro César Lourena Cid, the Head of the Army`s Department of Education and Culture (DECEX) - Army General Walter Souza Braga Netto, the Eastern Military Commander - Army General Decio Luiz Schons, Commander of Escola Superior de Guerra (ESG) - Lieutenant-Brigadier of the Air R/1 Ricardo Machado Vieira, - Secretary Personnel, Education, Health and Sport Ministry of Defense - Vice Admiral Claudio Portugal de Viveiros, Commander of the 1st Naval District - General Division Décio dos Santos Brasil, Vice Chief of DECEX - Vice Admiral Paulo Martino Zuccaro, Director of the Department of Military Sports - Vice Admiral Carlos Frederico Carneiro Primo, Deputy Brigadier General Jorge Antonio Smicelato, Commander of ESG – CCFEx – and other local and international authorities.

 

 

The first games of the competition took place yesterday, November 8, in the Army`s Physical Training Center (CCFEx). Brazil dominated the first round with excellent performances. Three Brazilian teams finished the day undefeated as they won their two games 2 sets 0. Evandro and Andre defeated the Netherlands (Frijters and Van Eerd) 21-7 and 21-9; Alvaro and Saymon won 21-13 and 21-15 against Latvia (Vents and Martins) while Hevaldo and George defeated Iran (Salagh and Abdolhamed) 21-16 and 21-13. Saymon and Alvaro showed out to be stronger than their teammates Hevaldo and George as they won the game 2 sets 0 (21-18; 21-18).

 

 

Three rounds were also played in the male category during the afternoon with a wide domination of the Brazilian teams that only one game out of the 12 games played. Álvaro / Saymon and Guto / Vitor are currently leading their groups while Germany (Erdmann / Betzien) and Sri Lanka (Yapa / Indika) are leading the two other groups.

Unfortunately, Saymon was injured after receiving a ball in the eyebrow that that hit his glasses. The injury required three stitches but the athlete has already recovered from this small injury!

 

 

“ I’m really proud to represent the Army and my country. It’s a great organization!”, declared George, part of the high-performance Athletes program.

In the afternoon, the Brazilian women’s teams opened the competition with success.  

 

 

Brazil also showed its strengths in the women’s competition as Taha/Eduarda and Larissa/Patricia won their two games 2 × 0 and are provisionally leading their group rankings!

Today’s games will start at 9 am (Rio de Janeiro time). The teams will be playing the last qualifying games in the morning while the women will play the quarterfinals in the afternoon.
