19th WMC Volleyball Women & 36th WMC Volleyball Men – Edmonton (CAN) – Day 6 & 7

EDMONTON (CAN) – The semi-finals of the 19th WMC Volleyball Women & 36th WMC Volleyball Men were held on June 1 in Edmonton (CAN) in presence of the General Jonathan H. Vance, CMM, MSC, CF and Chief of the Canadian Defence Staff. As it’s often the case, China and Brazil demonstrated that they were two of the volleyball superpowers.

Men’s competition

In the first semi-final, China faced a strong German team. The Chinese team won the two initial sets (25/20 and 25/21) but Germany didn’t give up and took the third set (22/25). But China was without any doubt the strongest team on the field and won the fourth set 26/24. In the men’s gold medal game, China will face Brazil who defeated Korea after a very tense and suspenseful game. Korea won the first set 25/21 but the Brazilian quickly reacted and took the lead 2 sets to 1 (25/18 and 25/23). Korea equalized to 2-2 (25/18). But finally, Brazil won the tie-break 17/15 and secured its place for the final!

Women’s competition

The Chinese, who won the title in Mayport last year, was facing Germany in the first semi-final of the female competition. And China achieved a true demonstration against a German team that couldn’t do anything... Three straight sets in 55 minutes (25/4, 25/16, 25/12) and a ticket for the final for China! In the second semi-final, the Brazilian ladies were too strong for France (25/13, 25/17, 25/22). We can’t wait to see Brazil and China facing in a high-level gold medal game!

The last classification games for place 5-8 also took place on June 1 and 2:

Men’s competition

USA was facing France on June 2 for the 5/6 place game. And as it was the case during the round-robin phase, the French team once again defeated the US team in three straight sets (25/14, 25/14, 25/21). With this victory, France is ranked fifth and USA sixth.

In the place 7-8 game, Canada faced the Netherlands. In the round-robin phase, Canada gave no chance to the Dutch players as they won 3/0. This time, the game was totally different. Canada seemed to be on its way to the victory as they won the two initial sets 25/21 and 27/25. But it was without counting on the reaction of the Dutch team, who won the last three sets 27/25, 25/21 and 15/9.

Women’s competition

The host country Canada started its first game of classification on June 1 against Kenya and won a deserved victory after a 104-minutes game in four sets (25/18, 25/17, 26/28, 25/15). Canada and USA were thus facing on June 2 for the place 5/6. Canada won the first set 25/17 but the US players directly reacted as they won the second set 25/17. We though Canada was on its way to the 5^th place as they won the third set 25/22. But the things didn’t go as planned for the host country as US took the fourth set 25/19 and even won the tie-break 15/11! With this victory, USA is ranked fifth, Canada sixth and Kenya seventh.
