WIENER NEUSTADT (AUT) - The 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship officially got underway in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, where military pentathletes from across the world have gathered to compete in one of CISM's most demanding and prestigious championships. Hosted by the Theresan Military Academy of the Austrian Armed Forces, the event takes place from 2 to 9 August 2026 under the auspices of the International Military Sports Council (CISM).
The championship was officially opened during a ceremony held in the historic inner courtyard of Wiener Neustadt Castle. A total of 74 male and 38 female athletes from 17 nations, accompanied by their support staff and officials, took part in the ceremony, celebrating the beginning of a week of elite military sport and international friendship.

Welcoming the participants, Brigadier Franz Hollerer, Deputy Commandant of the Theresian Military Academy, greeted all delegations on behalf of the Academy and the City of Wiener Neustadt, wishing every athlete success, fair competition and an enjoyable stay in Austria.
Wiener Neustadt has a long and distinguished history with Military Pentathlon. Having previously organized the championship in 1973, 1978, 1986, 1996, 2006, 2016 and 2018, the Austrian city is once again hosting the event, further strengthening its reputation as the historic home of Military Pentathlon within CISM. The modern sports facilities and infrastructure of the Theresian Military Academy provide ideal conditions for athletes to perform at the highest level.
Following CISM tradition, the Swedish delegation, host of the previous championship held in Halmstad in 2023, ceremonially transferred the CISM flag to the Austrian hosts. The flag was then raised to the sound of the CISM Anthem, performed by the Burgenland Military Band under the direction of Colonel Johann Kausz.

After a Brazilian athlete recited the CISM Athletes' Code of Ethics, Colonel Christian Hess (Switzerland), Official CISM Representative and Member of the CISM Board of Directors, officially declared the 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship open, marking the beginning of a week dedicated to excellence, military camaraderie and the CISM motto, Friendship through Sport.
Competition is now in full swing. Today, 4 August, athletes are competing in the Shooting event, the opening discipline of the championship. Over the coming days, competitors will face the traditional Military Pentathlon disciplines, including the Obstacle Run, Obstacle Swimming, Throwing, Cross Country Run and the spectacular Obstacle Relay, before the champions are crowned during the Closing Ceremony on 8 August.

CISM wishes all participating athletes, officials and organizers a successful championship and looks forward to another memorable edition of this flagship military sporting event.
