Algeria and Denmark claim Obstacle Relay World Titles as 68th WMC Military Pentathlon concludes in Austria

 

 

WIENER NEUSTADT (AUT) – The 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship came to an exciting conclusion on Saturday, 8 August, with the spectacular Obstacle Relay providing a fitting final sporting challenge after a week of intense competition in Wiener Neustadt.

 

The Obstacle Relay is one of the most dynamic and spectator-friendly events of Military Pentathlon. Contested as a knockout competition on the obstacle course, the event requires each member of the team to complete a section of the demanding course before handing over to the next athlete. Four athletes compete for each men’s team and three for each women’s team, making speed, technical precision, consistency and teamwork essential. With nations racing directly against each other through successive rounds, even the smallest mistake can determine whether a team advances or is eliminated.

 

The women’s competition produced a particularly thrilling battle. Brazil set the pace during qualification with a time of 2:04.37, ahead of Denmark and China. Brazil then defeated Norway in the first semifinal, while Denmark overcame China in the second, setting up a highly anticipated final between two of the strongest teams of the championship.

 

 

The final lived up to expectations. Denmark, represented by Tulle Mouridsen, Natalie Vaabengaard and Filippa Wetke, produced its fastest performance of the competition to claim the world title in 2:00.51. Brazil, with Aline Bichoff, Gleyci Kelly and Heryca Tayla, crossed the finish line in 2:00.96, meaning just 0.45 seconds separated gold and silver. China secured the bronze medal after defeating Norway by an equally narrow margin, 2:04.44 to 2:04.73, in the race for third place.

 

The men’s competition was just as intense. Türkiye recorded the fastest qualification time of 1:51.65, while Algeria, Austria and China also advanced strongly through the competition. Türkiye defeated Brazil in the quarterfinals and China in the semifinals to book its place in the final. Algeria progressed past Spain before overcoming host nation Austria in the other semifinal.

 

The men’s final then delivered one of the closest finishes of the championship. Algeria, represented by Adem Lyzidi, Yassine Ghibour, Abderaouf Boudab and Oualid Senani, produced a superb performance to claim the Obstacle Relay world title in 1:48.20. Türkiye, represented by Hasan Yalabuk, Tolgahan Su, Mustafa Oguz and Halil Ibrahim Akdeniz, finished only 0.18 seconds behind in 1:48.38 to take silver. Host nation Austria delighted the home crowd by securing the bronze medal, defeating China 1:52.46 to 1:52.98 in another exceptionally close race.

 

 

The Obstacle Relay brought the sporting programme of the 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship to an end following a week of competition in Shooting, Obstacle Run, Obstacle Swimming, Throwing, Cross-Country Run and Obstacle Relay. The championship once again showcased the exceptional physical and technical abilities required in Military Pentathlon, together with the teamwork, discipline and camaraderie that characterise CISM competitions.

 

Later on Saturday, all 112 athletes, together with their support staff and members of the organising team, gathered once again in the historic inner courtyard of Wiener Neustadt Castle for the Award and Closing Ceremony. The dignified ceremony honoured the winners of the championship and officially brought the 68th edition to a close.

 

The Burgenland Military Band provided the musical accompaniment for the ceremony, while an honour guard formed by soldiers of the Theresan Military Academy was also in formation.

 

 

Brigadier Franz Hollerer, Deputy Commandant of the Theresan Military Academy, welcomed the distinguished guests attending the ceremony, including H.E. Lina Rukštelienė, Ambassador of Lithuania to Austria; Lieutenant General Harald Vodosek, representing the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defence; Philipp Gruber, City Councillor for Sports representing the City of Wiener Neustadt; as well as the Defence Attachés of Germany and China accredited to Austria.

 

In his address, Brigadier Hollerer expressed his appreciation to the organising team for the successful delivery of the championship and thanked the athletes for the sportsmanship they had demonstrated throughout the week.

 

Lieutenant General Harald Vodosek also thanked the Theresan Military Academy and the Armed Forces Sports Center for organising the major international event. Addressing the competitors, he congratulated them on their performances and highlighted the fundamental importance of physical fitness in fulfilling military duties.

 

 

The ceremony continued with the presentation of awards to the champions and medalists across the different categories, recognising the outstanding performances achieved during the week in Wiener Neustadt.

 

Colonel Christian Hess of Switzerland, Official CISM Representative (OCR) and Member of the CISM Board of Directors, then addressed the participants on behalf of CISM. He expressed his gratitude to the Austrian Armed Forces for hosting and organising the World Championship and acknowledged the considerable efforts that contributed to its success.

 

In recognition of their contribution to the organisation of the championship, Colonel Christian Krammer, Head of the Armed Forces Sports Center; Lieutenant Colonel Roland Pulsinger, Project Officer in Charge; and Major Hannes Silberbauer, Technical Director, were presented with the CISM Order of Merit by Colonel Hess.

 

 

Colonel Hess also presented the prestigious CISM “Friendship Through Sport” Award. Following a vote among the participating delegations, Germany was selected as the recipient in recognition of its exemplary sportsmanship, fair play, team spirit and contribution to the positive atmosphere that characterised the World Championship.

 

Having officially declared the championship open at the beginning of the week, Colonel Hess also had the honour of bringing the event to its formal conclusion. With the words, “I declare the 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship closed,” the championship was officially brought to an end. The CISM flag, which had flown over the castle courtyard throughout the competition, was then lowered, marking the conclusion of another memorable edition of this historic CISM championship.

 

CISM extends its sincere appreciation to the Austrian Armed Forces, the Theresan Military Academy, the Armed Forces Sports Center, the Local Organising Committee, officials and volunteers for their commitment and contribution to the successful organisation of the championship.

 

 

The delegations departed Wiener Neustadt on Sunday, 9 August, taking with them the memories of a championship marked by outstanding performances, extremely close finishes, fair play and the strong bonds of friendship created through military sport.

 

The 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship once again demonstrated the unique spirit of CISM, bringing military athletes from around the world together through competition, mutual respect and the CISM motto, “Friendship through Sport.”

 

The Military Pentathlon community will meet again in 2027, when the discipline returns to the international stage as part of the 8th CISM Military World Summer Games in the Carolinas, USA. See you in 2027 for another great celebration of Military Pentathlon and Friendship through Sport!
