Obstacle Swim and Throwing set the stage for decisive final at 68th WMC Military Pentathlon

 

 

WIENER NEUSTADT (AUT) – The 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship continued on Thursday, 6 August, with a demanding double programme as athletes contested the Obstacle Swim in the morning before returning to competition for the Throwing event in the afternoon.

 

The third competition day began with the Obstacle Swim, one of Military Pentathlon’s fastest and most technical disciplines. Athletes faced a 50-metre course featuring four obstacles, requiring a combination of swimming speed, precision and efficient transitions both above and below the water.

 

In the men’s competition, João Miguel of Brazil produced the fastest performance of the day, completing the course in an outstanding 24.5 seconds to earn 1,168.0 points. Germany’s Pascal Remmele followed extremely closely in 24.7 seconds, scoring 1,163.2 points, while Brazilian Matheus Preccaro recorded 24.8 seconds for 1,160.8 points. The margins at the top underlined the intensity of the competition, with just three-tenths of a second separating the three fastest athletes.

 

 

Denmark dominated the women’s Obstacle Swim. Alberte Forsberg claimed victory in 28.1 seconds, while teammate Natalie Vaabengaard finished second in 28.5 seconds, completing an impressive one-two finish for the Danish team.

 

Later in the afternoon, attention shifted to the Throwing event. The discipline combines grenade precision throwing with grenade distance throwing, requiring athletes to balance accuracy and power while maintaining the consistency needed to secure valuable points towards the overall classification.

Norway’s Kristoffer Skonnord delivered the best men’s performance, winning the discipline with 191.8 points, ahead of William Lisandro Altamirano Arcos of Ecuador, who scored 190.2 points.

 

In the women’s competition, Wang Tang Lin of China took victory with 182.5 points, while Brazil’s Gleyci Kelly finished second with 178.3 points. The result contributed to a strong day for China, which heads into the decisive stage of the championship in a leading position in the women’s competition.

 

 

After four disciplines, the battle for the men’s individual world title remains exceptionally close. Pascal Remmele of Germany leads the overall classification with 4,420.3 points, but Brazil’s João Miguel is just 16.6 points behind with 4,403.7. His compatriot Matheus Preccaro occupies third place with 4,398.1 points, meaning only 22.2 points separate the top three athletes ahead of the final discipline. Brazil also holds fourth and fifth positions through Douglas Castro and Cristian Luan respectively.

 

Brazil’s impressive depth is reflected in the men’s team classification, where the nation leads after four disciplines, ahead of Germany and China.

 

In the women’s competition, Han Danyang of China leads the individual standings with 4,297.9 points after four events. China also leads the women’s team classification with 12,603 points, followed by Denmark with 12,389 and Brazil with 12,353.

 

 

The individual world titles will be decided today, Friday, 7 August, with the fifth and final discipline, the Cross-Country Run, scheduled from 09:00 to 11:00. The men will face a demanding 8 km course, while the women will compete over 4 km. After Shooting, Obstacle Run, Obstacle Swim and Throwing, endurance will now determine who leaves Wiener Neustadt as the 2026 CISM Military Pentathlon World Champion.

 

The 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship will conclude on Saturday, 8 August, with the spectacular Obstacle Relay from 09:00 to 12:30 at the Pentathlon Arena, followed by the Award and Closing Ceremony at 15:00 in the inner courtyard of the castle.
