Skonnord and Kimmel crowned World Champions after dramatic Cross-Country finale

 

 

WIENER NEUSTADT (AUT) – The individual competitions at the 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship reached a thrilling conclusion on Friday, 7 August, as the Cross-Country Run decided the 2026 individual and team world titles in Wiener Neustadt.

 

As the fifth and final discipline of Military Pentathlon, the Cross-Country Run provides a particularly exciting conclusion to the individual competition. The men competed over 8 kilometres, while the women covered 4 kilometres. Athletes started according to the overall standings established after Shooting, Obstacle Run, Obstacle Swim and Throwing, with the differences in points converted into staggered starting intervals. This pursuit format meant that the first athlete to cross the finish line would become the overall Military Pentathlon World Champion.

 

 

The men's race delivered a spectacular turnaround. Captain Kristoffer Skonnord of Norway began the Cross-Country Run in sixth position but produced a remarkable performance, gradually closing the gap on the athletes ahead of him. During the final kilometre, he overtook overall leader Pascal Remmele of Germany and crossed the finish line first to claim the world title.

 

Skonnord's exceptional final performance earned him 1,199.6 points in the Cross-Country Run and lifted his final total to 5,511.8 points. Remmele finished with 5,493.8 points to secure the silver medal, while Douglas Castro of Brazil completed the podium with 5,441.2 points. Brazil also placed João Miguel fourth and Matheus Preccaro fifth in the final individual classification.

 

The women's competition provided an equally dramatic conclusion. Nadja Kimmel of Germany was crowned World Military Pentathlon Champion with a final total of 5,304.8 points, following a strong Cross-Country Run in which she completed the 4 km course in 14:12.1.

 

 

The title race took an unexpected turn when Han Danyang of China crossed the finish line first but received a 50-point penalty for entering the wrong finish channel. The Chinese delegation lodged a protest against the decision, but the appeal was rejected and the penalty remained in place. Danyang therefore finished second overall with 5,258.8 points, narrowly ahead of Brazil's Heryca Tayla, who secured the bronze medal with 5,258.3 points – a difference of just half a point.

 

The Cross-Country Run also determined the final team classifications. Brazil was crowned men's team World Champion with 21,597.0 points, completing an outstanding championship in which its athletes consistently featured among the leading positions. Host nation Austria secured the silver medal with 20,874.8 points, while Denmark claimed bronze with 20,814.1 points.

 

 

In the women's team competition, China took the world title with 15,586.8 points. Denmark finished second with 15,490.4 points, while Brazil completed the podium with 15,304.3 points.

 

The newcomer classifications also produced impressive performances. Filippa Wetke of Denmark claimed the women's newcomer title with 5,077.1 points, ahead of Brazil's Gleyci Kelly and China's Hui Shao. In the men's category, João Miguel of Brazil was the outstanding newcomer, finishing with 5,430.1 points and an impressive fourth place in the overall individual championship. Austria's Björn Unger finished second in the newcomer classification, while China's Fu Jinbao took third place.

 

 

Although the individual and team Military Pentathlon titles have now been decided, the championship is not over yet. The focus shifts to the spectacular Obstacle Relay on Saturday, 8 August, from 09:00 to 12:30 at the Pentathlon Arena. The relay will provide one final opportunity for the participating nations to showcase their speed, teamwork and obstacle-course skills before the Award and Closing Ceremony at 15:00 in the inner courtyard of Wiener Neustadt Castle, bringing the 68th World Military Pentathlon Championship to its official conclusion.
