1st WMC Basketball 3x3 - Warendorf (GER) - Day 4
WARENDORF (GER) - The final day of qualifying and the first games of the finals of the 1st World Military Basketball 3x3 Championship took place on Thursday, August 7 in Warendorf, Germany.
The last 15 qualifying games of the women's competition were on the schedule on August 7 and the host country, Germany, continued its march forward and finished undefeated after its nine qualifying games. Germany's Katharina Müller, Luana Rodefeld, Sonja Greinacher and Svenja Brunckhorst finished ahead of France, who had eight wins, and the USA, who finished third with seven wins. After a sparkling start and six victories in a row, the Mongolian team has marked the stall and ends the qualification phase with three defeats which nevertheless allow them to finish in fourth place ahead of Latvia. Then follow Canada and the Netherlands (3 wins), France 2 and Germany 2 (2 wins) while the valiant Tanzanians unfortunately finish last despite some nice improvements seen throughout the tournament.
The first three matches of the final phase of the women's tournament were also held yesterday with two 1/8 finals that opposed the Netherlands and Tanzania as well as France 2 and Germany 2. The Netherlands proved to be stronger than Tanzania (18/11) while Germany 2 composed its ticket for the 1/4 finals thanks to a victory by forfeit against France 2. In the last women's match of the day, Tanzania won by forfeit the match for the 9th place following the new forfeit of the French team.
The women's 1/4 finals will be scheduled today with several exciting matches:
- Germany 1 vs Germany 2
- Latvia vs Mongolia
- USA vs Canada
- The Netherlands vs France
The men had already finished the elimination phase and the day of July 7th was exclusively dedicated to the final phase with the 1/16, 1/8 and 1/4 finals.
The favourites did honour to their status with the qualifications for the 1/4 finals of Morocco 1, USA, Korea, Lithuania and France 1. We will also note the superb performances of Luxembourg, winner of the very beautiful team of Lithuania 2 (19/17) and of Morocco 2 against the Netherlands 2 (17/11) as well as the terrible disillusionment for the host country, Germany 1, eliminated from the 1/8 finals by an exceptional team of Tanzania, which had already eliminated Germany 2 earlier.
The competition continued with the ¼ finals which were also very interesting. First of all, the USA made an amazing performance by defeating a team of Morocco 1 which had left a big impression since the beginning of the tournament (21/17). Lithuania also had to draw on its resources against Korea to validate its qualification for the semi-finals (21/19). In the other part of the table, France 1 defeated quite easily Luxembourg (21/15) while the surprising Tanzanian team, which had finished fourth of its qualification group, made again a huge surprise and took the best on Morocco 2 (21/14). A superb victory that allows the Tanzanians to face France 1 in the semi-finals of this 1st World Military Basketball 3x3 Championship while the other semi-final will see two giants of world basketball, the USA and Lithuania.
