BRUSSELS (BEL) – The International Military Sports Council (CISM) reminds all member nations, athletes and support personnel that the 2026 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List and Monitoring Program are in force as of 1 January 2026, following approval by WADA’s Executive Committee in September 2025.

The Prohibited List is mandatory for all signatories of the World Anti-Doping Code and identifies which substances and methods are prohibited in and out of competition, as well as substances banned in specific sports. The Monitoring Program includes substances that are not prohibited but are monitored to detect potential patterns of misuse.

Main Updates for 2026

For 2026, only limited changes have been introduced to the Prohibited List. The most notable update is the prohibition of the non-diagnostic use of carbon monoxide, including the use of re-breathing systems or equipment to administer carbon monoxide (Method M1.4). The use of carbon monoxide for diagnostic medical purposes remains permitted, provided it is carried out under the supervision of a medical or scientific professional.

CISM reminds all military athletes that they are strictly responsible for any prohibited substance found in their body or any prohibited method used. Athletes with legitimate medical needs may apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) in accordance with international anti-doping regulations. In case of doubt, athletes and support personnel should always consult their respective Anti-Doping Organizations before using any medication or method.
