ATHENS (GRE) — The Olympic flame shone brightly through the streets of Athens yesterday as the final stages of the 2026 Winter Olympics torch relay unfolded in the Greek capital. Among the distinguished participants carrying the flame was the Secretary General of the International Military Sports Council (CISM), Navy Captain Roberto Recchia, whose involvement underscored the increasing visibility and significance of military sport within the global Olympic community.

The relay, which began on 26 November 2025 in Olympia, has travelled across Greece, passing through cities, villages, and landmarks deeply rooted in the history of the Olympic spirit. Its last journey in Athens includes the Acropolis, Syntagma Square, and the Panathenaic Stadium, where the flame will be officially handed over to the Milano Cortina 2026 Organizing Committee on 4 December.

Yesterday, the Italian Navy Captain Roberto Recchia carried the flame after receiving it from Commander (OL) Eirini Aidinli from the Hellenic Navy, bronze medalist in rhythmic gymnastics at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. This symbolic gesture, exchanged in the heart of Athens, brought together the legacy of Olympic excellence and the military values of discipline, perseverance, and camaraderie.

The Secretary General’s participation reflected the essential role that CISM plays in promoting peace, understanding, and global unity through sport. By taking part in one of the most emblematic traditions of the Olympic Movement, CISM reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties between armed forces and civilian sport institutions, highlighting the shared values that underpin both communities.

Navy Captain Recchia emphasized that the presence of a CISM representative in the Athens flame relay stands as a recognition of the organization’s long-standing contribution to international sport and its mission to foster “Friendship Through Sport.” Military athletes have consistently demonstrated excellence not only within CISM events but also in major international competitions, illustrating the global relevance of military sport.

As the flame continues its journey toward the XXV Olympic Winter Games, commonly known as Milano Cortina 2026, CISM’s participation serves as a reminder of its active engagement with the Olympic family and its ongoing efforts to promote cooperation, respect, and solidarity among nations through sport.
