NICOSIA (CYP) - On 15 February 2026, the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus and the National Guard General Staff celebrated the International Day of Military Sports 2026 with the organization of a 5 km road race in Nicosia, commemorating the founding of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (18 February 1948).
Held in cooperation with the Cyprus Amateur Athletics Association as part of the Cyprus Road Grand Prix series, the event brought together members of the Security Forces and civilian runners in a shared celebration of sport, unity and CISM values. This year’s edition recorded the highest participation since the event was first established, reflecting growing enthusiasm and support for the initiative.

The competition also produced strong sporting results for the Security Forces. In the men’s race, all three podium places were claimed by Security Forces personnel. In the women’s race, a civilian athlete secured first place, while second and third positions were earned by members of the Security Forces, highlighting both the competitive level of the participants and the inclusive nature of the event.
Beyond the results, the race was marked by a powerful atmosphere of friendship, solidarity and fair play, fully embodying CISM’s motto, “Friendship through Sport.” The event once again demonstrated how military sport can serve as a bridge between the armed forces and civil society, while promoting healthy competition and mutual respect.
CISM Cyprus remains firmly committed to the active promotion of military sport and to upholding the values and principles of CISM at both national and international levels.

Congratulations to all participants, officials and organizers for delivering a successful and meaningful celebration of the International Day of Military Sports 2026 in Cyprus.
