SALZBURG (AUT) - On April 1 and 2, the Presidents of the CISM Sports Committees held their first meeting of 2022 in the Schwarzenbergkaserne facilities in Salzburg where they experienced the hospitality of the Austrian Armed Forces.

In the first session, the CISM President, Brigadier-General Hervé Piccirillo, gave a short update on the most important results of the Board of Directors meeting and explained his ideas for the future of CISM: healthy financial management, the central position of sport in all CISM activities and the important role of PCSCs. Brigadier-General Gernot Gasser as Chief of Delegation of the Austrian Armed Forces, Colonel Dorah Mamby Koita as CISM Secretary General, Lieutenant-Colonel Walter Borghino as President of the Sports Commission and Lieutenant-Colonel Jan van den Dool as CISM Sports Director also gave their welcoming words.

The first two presentations were made by Mr. David Vandenplas, CISM International Federations Coordinator and Colonel Joseph Bakari, CISM Games Director. David explained how to work with the International Federations and the objectives of the MOUs with the IFs. In the following discussion, the PCSCs were able to explain the importance and benefits of their role in this process. Joseph gave an update on the latest developments in the various CISM games.

After the first break and a group photo, the distinguished guests left the meeting to focus on other tasks and responsibilities. The PCSCs, the CISM Sports Director and the Sports Department staff continued the meeting as a working meeting where many practical topics were discussed. In a very open setting, topics concerning the CISM Sports strategy were discussed, such as:

  • How to strengthen the position and role of PCSCs within CISM.
  • The strategy to find hosts for the World Military Championships.
  • How to work with potential new sports within CISM.
  • Integration of parasport into CISM.
  • CISM Anti-Doping Management.
  • Support for new CISM functionaries to acquire appropriate knowledge and skills.
  • Look for opportunities to increase budgets for CISM sporting events.
  • Etc, etc.

After two intensive days, with very fruitful discussions, the meeting was closed by Colonel Nilton Rolim, the PCSC Representative, with some final recommendations from the PCSCs to the CISM General Secretariat, and by the CISM Sports Director Lieutenant-Colonel Jan van den Dool with a summary of the two days and the way forward with all the action points of the meeting.
