CISM Military Athletes ready to shine at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games
TOKYO (JAP) - The Tokyo Olympic Games, originally scheduled for 2020 and postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has affected the world since March 2020, finally got underway on Friday, 23 July 2021 with a spectacular opening ceremony that culminated in Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka lighting the cauldron to officially launch the competition.
The Tokyo Games finally got underway after a four-hour spectacle in a virtually empty stadium following the measures put in place to combat the coronavirus. The joy was evident on the masked faces of the athletes from more than 200 countries who proudly marched into the stadium after months of waiting. The 32nd Summer Olympic Games will be held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 in Tokyo. The event will bring together 11,090 athletes representing 206 nations competing in 46 disciplines.
As in every edition, many military athletes, used to compete in CISM competitions, will be present in Tokyo to represent their country and military sport at the highest level. This year in Tokyo, 658 CISM military athletes (300 women and 358 men) from 33 CISM Member Nations (Algeria, Germany, Austria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, USA, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Norway, Poland, Dominican Republic, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania) will compete against the international sport elite in 27 different disciplines.
