First victories shape the race for the quarter-finals at the 54th CISM Military World Basketball Championship

BOURGES (FRA) – The first two days of competition at the 54th CISM Military World Basketball Championship have already produced thrilling contests, dominant performances and the first indications of which nations are emerging as serious contenders for the men's and women's titles.

Hosted in Bourges, France, the championship gathers 228 military athletes from 13 nations, competing in 12 men's and seven women's teams, all united by the CISM motto, "Friendship through Sport."

Following Sunday's Opening Ceremony, the group stage got underway on Monday across the Palais des Sports du Prado and the CREPS Centre-Val de Loire, with every victory proving crucial in the race to the quarter-finals.

In the women's competition, two nations have made particularly strong statements. France, playing in front of its home crowd in Group A, began with a convincing 95-28 victory over Canada before producing an even more dominant 118-62 win against Latvia. Germany also remains unbeaten after defeating Latvia (86-62) and Canada (78-63), setting up a highly anticipated showdown between the two undefeated teams on Wednesday. That encounter will determine the winner of Group A and the top seed heading into the knockout stage, while Canada and Latvia will battle for third place.

Group B has already been decided. Brazil has secured first place after back-to-back victories over the United States (78-50) and the Netherlands (107-53), confirming its status as one of the tournament favourites. Wednesday's match between the United States and the Netherlands will determine second place in the group.

The men's tournament has also started to take shape after two days of competition. In Group A, host nation France has enjoyed the perfect start. After edging Latvia 72-70 in a thrilling opening match, the French team produced one of the standout performances of the championship by defeating the Netherlands 89-46. France has therefore secured first place in the group, while Wednesday's meeting between Latvia and the Netherlands will decide who joins the hosts in the quarter-finals.

In Group B, Brazil has also booked first place after impressive victories over Bangladesh (96-57) and Cyprus (96-57). Cyprus, thanks to its opening-day win over Bangladesh, remains second in the standings and is well placed to advance.

The battle for first place in Group C remains wide open. Greece announced itself as a serious contender with an emphatic 124-54 victory over Lebanon, one of the most dominant displays of the championship so far. Canada, meanwhile, kept its qualification hopes alive with an 80-67 victory over Lebanon. As both teams remain unbeaten, Wednesday's clash between Greece and Canada will decide the group winner.

In Group D, Lithuania has been equally impressive, comfortably defeating Germany (103-67) and Kenya (86-60) to secure first place in the group. Germany and Kenya will now meet in a decisive contest to determine which nation advances to the quarter-finals alongside the Baltic side.

With the final day of the group stage now approaching, several qualification places remain at stake, promising another day of intense competition before attention turns to Thursday's quarter-finals.

Wednesday's programme promises another exciting day of military basketball. In the men's tournament, Latvia faces the Netherlands, Greece takes on Canada, Bangladesh meets Brazil, and Germany plays Kenya. In the women's competition, all eyes will be on the clash between unbeaten France and Germany, while Canada meets Latvia and the United States faces the Netherlands.
