
QUITO (ECU) – The 26th CISM World Military Equestrian Championship 2026 was officially inaugurated at the Eloy Alfaro Military Academy in Quito, marking the start of one of the most prestigious events on the international military sports calendar.
The championship brings together military riders from 18 nations and will take place from 2 to 6 June at the San Jorge Military Fort in Sangolquí, Ecuador. The Opening Ceremony welcomed military and civilian authorities, CISM representatives, athletes, officials, and guests from around the world.
The ceremony began with a performance by the Ecuadorian Army Fanfare, followed by the traditional Parade of Nations. Delegations entered the venue carrying their national flags, creating an atmosphere of friendship, mutual respect, and military camaraderie that reflects the values of the International Military Sports Council (CISM).
A key moment of the ceremony was the raising of the CISM flag, symbolizing the unity of the military sports community and its shared commitment to promoting peace, friendship, and solidarity through sport. Ecuadorian authorities were also recognized for their continued support of military sport and their dedication to hosting international military competitions.
The Official CISM Representative Lieutenant Colonel Jan Van den Dool highlighted the significance of the championship as a platform that strengthens cooperation, understanding, and friendship among the Armed Forces of the world through the universal language of sport.

The Opening Ceremony also featured the traditional “Queen’s Gymnastics” performance by cadets of the Eloy Alfaro Military Academy, as well as several cultural and artistic presentations showcasing Ecuador’s rich heritage and military traditions.
With the championship now officially underway, the world's best military riders are set to compete over the coming days in a highly anticipated competition that will test their skill, precision, and partnership with their horses. Beyond the sporting performances, the event continues to strengthen the bonds of friendship, cooperation, and mutual understanding among the participating Armed Forces.
The first competitions are taking place today at the Army Equestrian School within the San Jorge Military Fort, where athletes will compete for individual and team honours throughout the week.
