WARENDORF (GER) – The 5th CISM World Military Archery Championship officially came to a close on 23 June with a memorable Closing Ceremony in Warendorf, bringing together athletes, officials, organizers and guests to celebrate a week of outstanding sporting performances, international friendship and military camaraderie.
Following six days of competition that showcased some of the world's finest military archers, participants enjoyed the traditional CISM Cultural Day before gathering for the championship's final official ceremony. The occasion provided an opportunity to reflect not only on the exceptional level of competition witnessed throughout the week but also on the values that define CISM and unite military personnel from around the world.
The Closing Ceremony was attended by Official CISM Representative and CISM VP Asia Major General Rashid Mahboob Al-Dosari, CISM Secretary General Navy Captain Roberto Recchia, Colonel Dirk Schwede of the German Armed Forces, former CISM Vice President for Europe, Lieutenant Colonel Christian Luetzkendorf, Chief of Delegation of Germany and Board of Directors Member for Europe, representatives of local authorities, technical officials and delegations from the 17 participating nations.

In his closing address, Major General Al-Dosari praised the outstanding organization of the championship and highlighted the spirit demonstrated by all participants throughout the week. “Over the past days, we have witnessed archery of the highest international standard, but above all we have witnessed friendship, respect and solidarity among military athletes from different nations. These are the values that make CISM unique and that continue to strengthen our motto, Friendship Through Sport,” he said. The Official CISM Representative also expressed his sincere appreciation to the German Armed Forces, the organizing committee, volunteers, technical officials and all partners whose dedication and professionalism contributed to the success of the championship.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of the prestigious Friendship Through Sport Award. Following a vote conducted among the participating delegations, Germany was selected as the recipient of the award in recognition of its exemplary sportsmanship, fair play, team spirit and contribution to the positive atmosphere that characterized the championship. The distinction reflects the respect earned from fellow competitors throughout the week and remains one of the most meaningful honours presented at CISM events.
The Closing Ceremony also provided an opportunity to recognize individuals whose commitment and dedication have made significant contributions to military sport and to the successful development of military archery over many years.

On behalf of the CISM President and the CISM Board of Directors, Major General Al-Dosari awarded the CISM Order of Merit to Lieutenant Colonel Christian Luetzkendorf, Chief of Delegation of Germany, in recognition of his longstanding commitment to military sport and his significant contribution to the successful organization and delivery of the 5th CISM World Military Archery Championship. A second CISM Order of Merit was presented to Hauptmann (OF-2) Harald Kruse (retired) in recognition of many years of dedicated service to military archery, outstanding professionalism and valuable support to the development of military sport within Germany and the international CISM community.
The ceremony concluded with the lowering of the CISM flag and the official declaration of the championship's closure, marking the end of an event that will be remembered for its exceptional sporting level, impeccable organization and strong spirit of friendship among nations.
Throughout the championship, 115 athletes from 17 nations competed across recurve, compound and para-archery events, producing performances of the highest international standard. Olympic medallists, Olympians and world-class competitors delivered memorable moments on the field of play, while the continued growth of para-archery highlighted CISM's commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities within military sport.

As participants prepared to return home, the championship concluded in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere during a traditional barbecue gathering hosted by the organizers. Athletes, officials, volunteers and guests shared one final evening together, exchanging experiences and celebrating the friendships forged throughout an unforgettable week in Warendorf.
The informal gathering perfectly reflected the spirit of CISM. Beyond the medals and sporting achievements, the championship created opportunities for military personnel from different nations and cultures to connect through their shared passion for sport and service. New friendships were established, existing bonds were strengthened and memories were created that will long outlast the final scores and podiums.
While Warendorf 2026 has now come to an end, the military archery community already looks ahead to its next major challenge. Many of the athletes who distinguished themselves this week are expected to reunite next year at the 8th CISM Military World Summer Games in Charlotte, USA, where archery will once again feature among the flagship sports of CISM's premier multisport event.

Following an exceptional championship in Germany, the road to Charlotte 2027 has officially begun.
