COLOMBO (SRI) – The third working day of the 80th CISM General Assembly and Congress unfolded with a dynamic blend of regional cooperation, democratic milestones, and profound reflection, reaffirming the spirit of global military solidarity in the Sri Lankan capital.

The morning saw the much-anticipated Continental Meetings of Africa, America, Asia, and Europe, during which delegates gathered in their respective regional blocs to address strategic priorities, upcoming military sporting events, and regional cooperation efforts. These working sessions remain a pillar of the General Assembly, offering an essential platform for tailored dialogue and decision-making at the continental level.

One of the day’s highlights was the election of new members to the CISM Board of Directors, marking a key moment of institutional renewal and democratic participation. In Africa, Brigadier General Brenda Mutungutungu of South Africa was elected, becoming a prominent figure in shaping the future of military sport on the continent.

In Europe, Lieutenant Colonel Jan Van den Dool from the Netherlands and Lieutenant Colonel Christian Luetzkendorf from Germany secured their seats, bringing with them a wealth of experience and leadership. Meanwhile, Asia welcomed Brigadier General Jamshid Fooladi from Iran and Brigadier General Ali Ibrahim Al-Sheikhi from Saudi Arabia as newly elected Board members, both committed to strengthening CISM’s footprint in the region.

As new leaders step forward, CISM also extends its heartfelt gratitude to the outgoing Board of Directors Members for their invaluable years of commitment and service. Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Ghulam Shabbir Anjum, Brigadier General Oh Yeong Dae, Colonel Jose Carlos Garcia-Verdugo, and Major General Oleg Botsman leave behind a legacy of dedication and contribution to the global military sports movement. Their unwavering support and guidance have been instrumental in advancing CISM’s mission, and their impact will continue to resonate within the organization for years to come.

In addition to governance, today’s agenda featured dynamic exchanges with key CISM partners. SIUS, a long-standing provider of cutting-edge scoring systems, engaged with the continental delegations to highlight technological innovations that enhance the accuracy and integrity of military competitions. World Sambo representatives also took the floor, introducing their combat sport to the CISM community and discussing the prospect of a future test event under CISM’s framework – a potential new chapter in the Council’s expanding sports portfolio.

The day concluded with a solemn and deeply moving tribute at the National War Memorial in Sri Jayawardanapura, a powerful symbol of remembrance and peace. The ceremony, attended by CISM President Colonel Nilton Rolim, Secretary General Navy Captain Roberto Recchia, members of the Board of Directors, and national delegations, honored the sacrifices of fallen soldiers and reaffirmed CISM’s founding values. The laying of wreaths and the poignant notes of the “Last Post” echoed across the grounds, leaving a lasting emotional impact on all in attendance.
