22nd WMC Equestrian – Rio de Janeiro (BRA) – Awarding Ceremony and first trainings

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA) – The morning of 13 October 2021 began with a medal ceremony of the International Military Sports Council (CISM), organised in the framework of the 22nd World Military Equestrian Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The "CISM Order of Merit" and "Sport Medal of Merit" medals were awarded by Colonel Hervé Piccirillo, CISM President, to some 40 military personnel from the Armed Forces and Auxiliary Forces of Brazil, who have participated or contributed in one way or another to the development of international military sport.

The ceremony took place in the presence of Colonel Hervé Piccirillo, CISM President, Rear Admiral Elson Luis de Oliveira Góis and Brigadier General Luiz Alberto Cureau Júnior.

The CISM President declared during the Ceremony: “Since the CISM creation, Brazil has played a major role in the development and the influence of our institution worldwide. The Brazilian Armed Forces joined CISM 66 years ago in 1954. Since then, Brazil has always been extremely active with the organization of almost 60th World Military Championships and the participation of Brazilian teams in more 450 CISM events. Moreover, Brazil also organized the 5th World Military Summer Games in 2011, one of the most important events in the CISM History, bringing together more than 7000 participants and 101 nations.”

He also added: “The Brazilian armed forces are also very much involved in the operation of CISM with PCSC and CSC members and Officers affected to Brussels within the CISM General Secretariat. The reality is that Brazil is undeniably the most active and participative CISM Member Nation in the recent CISM history."

“Through this ceremony, you show the unity of the Brazilian armed forces because the awarded soldiers come from the army, the Navy and the Air force. You are a team, the team of fraternity, loyalty and courage.  This ceremony is also the symbol of solidarity with the families. That is crucial for each armed forces around the world to take care about the families.  Through your presence today, I would like to warmly thank you for your commitment and your support to the success of the missions of the armed forces”, concluded the CISM President.

The highlight of the morning was the post-mortem presentation of medals, received by the close relatives of the awarded.

In the afternoon, the athletes of the 22nd World Military Equestrian Championship had the opportunity to train in order to get to know their mounts a little better, to familiarise themselves with the tracks and obstacles, to define strategies for the teams, and to prepare for the first day of competition, which will take place on 14 October from 11.30 a.m. local time.
