38th WMC Judo – Rio de Janeiro (BRA) - Day 3

With 4 gold medals, Brazil dominates the second day of competition

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRA) – During the first day of the individual competitions of the 38th WMC Judo, Brazil won four gold medals in Rio de Janeiro, confirming their domination after the two team titles on November 8.

The big fight of the day was the clash between Rafaela Silva (-57kg) and Helene Receveaux, from France. Until the beginning of this WMC, Rafaela had lost her four fights against the French on the international circuit, the last one on the IJF World Circuit in the end of September. But here in Rio, his hometown, Rafaela Silva managed to beat the French twice, after her victory in the team event final.

“I've been working hard. Everyone knows I lost against her in the last four fights, so I came here hoping a different result”. The current Olympic champion and 11th in the world ranking also declared to SporTv, relieved, just after leaving the mat: “It has that taste of being Brazilian, fighting here in our country makes the difference. I also won a World Cup and an Olympics in this wonderful city. Everything is possible in Rio!”

The fight, as promised, was very hard. On several occasions, Receveaux nearly got her o-uchi-gari, but Rafaela managed to get rid of everyone and responded by seeking the projection, also to no avail. During the Golden Score, Rafaela continued to 'give' the entrance to Receveaux and, in one of them, she fitted her deadly counterattack, put the French aside on the ground and left celebrating the waza-ari that was worth the gold medal.

Before Rafaela, Brazil had already won three golds in the day. The first came with Eric Takabatake (-60kg) over the Russian Sakhavat Gadzhiev. In less than a minute, he projected the opponent twice, and in the first, an o-uchi-gari, was worth a waza-ari. Seconds later a seoi-nage entered to nail another waza-ari and the resulting ippon.

At the exit of the tatami, Takabatake declared: “I already had lost against him and had that feeling of rematch”, he said. Gadzhiev defeated the Brazilian in the Grand Slam of Judo Ekaterinburg in March, taking the Brazilian out of the way of the bronze medal.

Jéssica Pereira (-52kg) had more work with Russian Yulia Kazarina, winning only in the Golden Score. The beginning of the fight was marked by a strong dispute by the footprint, and Jessica only came to dominate from the middle of the confrontation. In the Golden Score, still in the first minute, Jessica immobilized the rival with a sankako and took the gold. After the victory, she ran into the arms of an emotional mother who was, together with the whole family, shouting at the top of the crowd. “I was very happy they could see that victory”, she said after receiving the medal.

Charles Chibana also had to fight hard to beat the Russian Alim Balkarov. It came to take a fright even in the first ten seconds of the fight, when a waza-ari scored by Balkarov was eventually withdrawn by the referee after video review. The fight was open and intense all the time, but in the end the Brazilian entered an o-soto-gari that laid the Russian and was worth the ippon. Chibana had already beaten Balkarov in the second bout of the team event the day before. Brazil also won three other medals with the bronze medals of Gabriela Chibana (-48kg), Tamires Da Silva (-57kg) and Marcelo Contini (-73kg).

The two other gold medals were awarded to Russia with the victories of Irina Dolgova against the French Marien Lhenry in the gold medal game of the women’s -48kg category and Georgii Elbakiev who defeated Saiyinjirigala (CHN) in the men’s -73kg final.
