65th WMC Military Pentathlon – Wiener Neustadt (AUT) - Day 4

WIENER NEUSTADT (AUT) – The last event of the 65th WMC Military Pentathlon, the cross-country, was held yesterday in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, and we now know the new military world champion.

The Chinese Guan Chaonan was the fastest of the individual women cross-country race as she crossed the finish line in 13;51,6 for a total score of 1128,4 points. The Russian Liudmila Egorova (1125,9 points) and Evgeniia Aksenova (1121,4 points) were respectively ranked second and third of the race. Despite a 7th place in the cross-country, the Danish Sara Hjalager won the final ranking of the individual event with a total of 5410,9 points after 5 events. With a seven-points lead on the runner-up Chaonan Guan (CHN, 5403,4 points), Hjalager won the first world military title of her career! Another Chinese athlete, Lu Pingping, is completing the podium with 5383,4 points.

Ranked fifth in the female competition, the Russian Irina Svechnikova won the individual newcomer women ranking ahead of Elisangela Quaresma (BRA) and Yenire Rodriguez (VEN).

The Russian female team won the cross-country team women event, its 4th victory out of the 5 events! China was ranked second while the Danish team finished on the third step of the podium. Despite such impressive results, the Russian female team didn’t manage to win the final ranking of the team event. After Salinas in 2017, the Chinese Chaonan Guan, Lu Pingping and Wu Qian won their second title in a row as they were the strongest team after the five events. Russia took silver while Brazil was ranked third.

The cross-country event was fatal to the local athlete Philipp Eibl (AUT), leader of the competition before this last event. Douglas Castro (BRA) won the event with a 0,1 point lead on the Russian Sergei Alpatov (1146,6 points) while Roman Hvalonski (EST-1130,4 points) was ranked third. With a 65th place in the cross-country event, Philipp Eibl lost his leadership and finished on the 7th place of the final ranking. After winning the 2016 edition, also hosted by the city of Wiener Neustadt, the Russian Sergei Alpatov became once again, two years later, the new Military Pentathlon World Champion with a total of 5601,8 points! An impressive performance from the Russian athlete, followed by Yucheng Pan (CHN – 5505,0 points) and Andrej Sonnenberg (GER – 5501,3 points), the silver and bronze medallists.

The individual newcomer men ranking was dominated by the Brazilian delegation as Renan Csuka won the title with a total of 5474,2 points while his teammate Miquel Neto took silver with 5290,0 points. Mario Seyser, cheered by the local fans, finished on the third step of the podium with 5237,3 points.

The Russian male team imitated the female team by winning the cross-country team event ahead of Brazil and China. With this last victory, the Russian team, composed of Sergei Alpatov, Ivan Driukhanov, Alexey Svechnikov and Aleksei Krylov, also won the final ranking of the team event ahead of China and Brazil! The Russian delegation was too strong for its opponents this year!

The 65th WMC Military Pentathlon will officially be closed today with the Obstacle Run Relay, one of the most impressive races of the event, which will be followed by the Closing Ceremony in Wiener Neustadt.
