MOSCOW (RUS) - The 1st Military Men's Rugby-7 Challenge 2023 in Moscow began with a grand opening ceremony held at the sports complex in "Luzhniki." The tournament featured teams from the armed forces of Russia, Belarus, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. The CISM President Colonel Nilton Rolim inaugurated the event, emphasizing the importance of sports in promoting friendship and understanding among nations. The tournament took place from August 24 to 26, with a packed schedule of matches.
On the final day of the competition, Russia emerged as the champions of the 1st Military Men's Rugby-7 Challenge 2023. Colonel Andrey Zykov, representing the Russian Armed Forces, congratulated the winners on behalf of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, General Sergey Shoygu. The Republic of South Africa secured the runner-up position, and Sri Lanka claimed the bronze medal. Bangladesh and Belarus secured the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Colonel Nilton Rolim, CISM President, Colonel Artem Gromov, Major General Oleg Botsman, Igor Artemyev, Alexey Shaposhnikov, and Alexey Mitryushin. This tournament marked the introduction of Rugby 7s as a trial event within CISM, with the goal of achieving CISM Category A status in the future. The closing and award ceremony was held at Moscow's iconic "Luzhniki" sports complex, concluding the historic 1st Military Men's Rugby-7 Challenge on August 26, 2023.
