DAR ES SALAAM (TAN) - The much-anticipated 79th CISM General Assembly and Congress commenced today in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, promising a week of significant discussions and decisions aimed at advancing military sports on a global scale.
The proceedings began with the first session of the Board of Directors (BoD), held in the meeting rooms of the prestigious Johari Rotana Hotel. The session, chaired by Colonel Nilton Rolim, CISM President, featured an extensive agenda, highlighting key reports and discussions vital to the organization's mission and objectives.
Colonel Rolim initiated the session with his insightful communication, setting the tone for the day's deliberations. Following his address, Navy Captain Roberto Recchia, CISM Secretary General, presented a comprehensive report detailing the organization's activities and achievements since the previous Board of Directors.
The session continued with continental reports delivered by Vice-Presidents representing Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe, providing valuable insights into regional developments and challenges.
Colonel Sven Serré, CISM Treasurer General, presented the financial report, emphasizing CISM's commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparency. Subsequently, Presidents of various CISM commissions, including Regulations, Strategy, Solidarity, Sports, Finance and Budget, and Women in CISM, presented their respective reports, highlighting achievements and outlining future initiatives.
Crucial matters such as CISM Strategy and General Affairs, election procedures for 2024, and the CISM Statutory Calendar were discussed in detail. The session also focused on the formulation of CISM Sports Policy, including the approval of sports calendars for the years 2024, 2025, and 2026, along with a comprehensive 5-year plan. Additionally, the approval of new PCSC was discussed.
Looking ahead, the second session of the Board of Directors is scheduled to convene on May 17th, promising further discussions on critical issues.
In the morning of May 13th, the solemnity of the event continued as CISM authorities, including President Colonel Nilton Rolim, Secretary-General Navy Captain Roberto Recchia, members of the Board of Directors, representatives from the PCSC, Chiefs of Delegation from Member Nations, and the CISM Headquarters Staff, paid homage to the Tanzanian casualties of the Tanzanian Independence at the Uhuru Monument. This heartfelt tribute underscored CISM's commitment to honoring the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom and independence.
Later in the afternoon of May 13th, the focus shifted to Continental Meetings, providing a platform for in-depth discussions and strategic planning tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities faced by each region. Representatives from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe convened to deliberate on regional priorities, share insights, and explore collaborative initiatives to advance military sports within their respective continents.
These continental meetings served as crucial forums for fostering collaboration, exchanging best practices, and strengthening ties among CISM member nations across the globe. As delegates engaged in productive discussions, the spirit of camaraderie and cooperation that defines the CISM community was palpable, setting the stage for continued progress and success in the days ahead.
On May 14, the 79th CISM General Assembly and Congress reached another significant milestone with the grand Opening Ceremony, which was attended by distinguished guests and dignitaries from around the world. Among the esteemed attendees were CISM President Colonel Nilton Rolim; His Excellency Doctor Philip Isdor Mpango, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania; Honorable Dr. Stergomena Lawrence Tax, Minister for Defence and National Service; General Jacob John Mkunda, Chief of the Tanzanian Peoples’ Defense Forces; Honorable Hamis Mwijuma, Deputy Minister of Sports and Culture; Honorable Neema Msitha, CEO Tanzania Sports Council; Honorable Albert Chalamila, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner; Honorable Dr. Faraji Mnyepe, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence and National Service; Lieutenant-General Salum Othman, Chief of Staff, as well as CISM Secretary-General Navy Captain Roberto Recchia, members of the CISM Board of Directors, PCSCs, Chiefs of Delegation from Member Nations, and the CISM Headquarters Staff.
In his address, CISM President Colonel Nilton Rolim expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Tanzanian Armed Forces for their unwavering support and commitment in organizing this magnificent event. During the ceremony, CISM President Colonel Nilton Rolim awarded the CISM Order of Merit to the Tanzanian authorities for their support in organizing the event and their contributions to the development of CISM and world military sports. The ceremony was followed by group photos and a warm welcome cocktail, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and collaboration among attendees.
Later in the day, a Press Conference was held, attended by CISM President Colonel Nilton Rolim, CISM Secretary General Navy Captain Roberto Recchia, CISM Vice-President Africa Major-General Maikano Abdullahi, Major-General Francis Mbindi, Chairperson of the National Organizing Committee, Brigadier-General Saidi Hamis Saidi, Deputy Chairperson, and the Chief of Delegation of Tanzania. During the Press Conference, the participants answered questions from the local press, providing insights into the objectives and significance of the event.
The day concluded with the second PCSC Meeting of the year and meetings of the respective CISM Commissions, setting the stage for further deliberations and engagements in the coming days.
